Trips & Tours

Camp Redwood is always adding and upgrading its activity programs to meet the needs of the future and to help prepare its campers for the future. We also want our campers to have fun while learning. With this in mind and in keeping with this philosophy, added to our regular program will be a series of TOURS AND TRIPS conducted during the course of our eight-week season. These tours should wet the appetites of the most discriminating youngsters.

Please note: Since each trip or tour is conducted once during the camp season, a child will participate in those trips or tours that are scheduled during his or her stay at Camp. Rescheduling or cancellation of certain trips may be necessary if inclement weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances prevail beyond our control.

  • Lake Minnewaska
  • Ulster County Fair

Optional Programs

Aviation:

wingsTop Gun Pilot Flight Training Program:

Teenage boys and girls are always complaining about being bored, and tired of doing the same old things.

To meet this challenge, Camp Redwood has always attempted to provide motivating and exciting programs. In keeping with this tradition we are providing optional Flight Instruction.

Your teenage son or daughter can learn to fly at Camp Redwood. All instruction using the most modern aircraft is under the supervision of F.A.A. Certified Flight Instructors.

Standard Program Includes:

10 hours dual flight instruction, your child at the controls of an aircraft with a certified flight instructor.

20 hours as observer time in Aircraft. This enables the student pilot to observe his or her fellow students while performing their maneuvers. Observer time serves two purposes, first to see and recognize poor technique by fellow students, which helps students improve their own skills, and secondly for group critique, which also serves as part of ground school training.

1-2 hours per week of formal ground school, using the Jeppeson Sanderson Program with a Certified Ground School Instructor.

Academics:

English as a Second Language (ESL)

For English abilities from beginner and up. This program will focus on traditional English grammar and its application to a range of reading formats and to oral usage by students. Students will have individual needs assessed and will work independently in small groups and as a full class on drill and practice, oral expression and applied reading of English.

Remedial Math and Reading

The Remedial Math program is a skills maintenance program involving both grade level computation and concept application skills. Drill and practice; use of manipulatives; small and large group games; student boardwork; oral and written problem analysis and solving will occur in the remediation process.

The Remedial Reading program is an integrated program of applied reading skills. A range of resources will be used to reinforce comprehension, contextual vocabulary use and definition, awareness of topic with supporting detail, gleaning of stated as well as inferred information.

Kumon

Kumon is a reading and math program that employs a unique learning method designed to help each child develop the skills needed to perform to his or her potential. The curriculum spans material from preschool all the way up to college.

THE KUMON METHOD FOSTERS:

1.) A mastery of the basics

2.) Improved concentration and study habits

3.) Increased self-discipline and self confidence

4.) A proficiency in material at every level

5.) Performance to each students full potential

6.) A sense of accomplishment

The Kumon Method was created over 50 years ago in Japan by Toru Kumon, a teacher and parent who wanted to help his son do better in school. His belief that every child possesses untapped abilities and the potential to excel remains central to the Kumon Philosophy. In short, there's nothing a child can't do. The Kumon Method was developed to unlock the potential in every child. That is the primary mission of Kumon, and it's being accomplished everyday.
